Sleeping Ariadne

Description:

According to Greek mythology, Ariadne was a princes of the kingdom of Crete, she fell in love with Theseus and helped him kill the Minotaur and escape the deadly labrynth. Theseus was supposed to then marry Ariadne and return with her to Athens, however, mid-voyage he abondons her, supposedly while she slept, on the island of Naxos. The cast is copied from a statue , now housed in the Vatican, which is probably a a Roman copy of a piece produced during the Hellenistic period.

Condition: The nose, upper lip, some fingers on the left hand, the right hand, and parts of the drapery were repaired to make the cast.
