Erechtheion: Egg and Dart Cornice

Description:

Architectural elements taken from the Erechtheion. The building itself was begun in 421 BC but not completed until 406 BC. It was built to replace the Temple of Athena Nike and is one of the most decorative examples of Greek architecture. These two particular Egg and Dart cornices are modeled after those that decorated the Porch of the Maidens which appeared on the south side of the original.
