Interior Design is a critical component of creating and commemorating beautiful and enduring spaces. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is proud to present the Interior Design Series, which will promote interior design’s intrinsic importance to classicism, offering a variety of initiatives, including continuing education courses and public programs featuring prominent interior designers and experts. On September 21, 2021, the ICAA was proud to present the debut of The Interior Design Series, Christopher Roy’s lecture Creativity, Collaboration, and Craftsmanship in the Classical Interior. The program is now available to watch online in its entirety.
For interior designer Christopher Roy, the most rewarding and fruitful relationships on any project are often those with the craftspeople and artisans who bring the vision of the architect and designer to life. Interior designers and architects often find themselves modern-day patrons of the artists and craftspeople who bring authenticity and rigor to contemporary classical interiors. This lecture uses examples from recent projects to focus on the intersection between interior design, architecture, and craftsmanship and discusses the opportunity and responsibility inherent in creating classical interiors with highly specialized trades. Examples from recent projects include work with French firms Atelier Saint-Jacques and Feau et Cie as well as the Verona atelier of San Francisco-based QuarryHouse.
Christopher Roy is a San Francisco and Charleston-based interior designer. After earning a BA in Art History and an MA in Interior Design from Florida State University he worked with several small influential designers in the Bay Area before joining the renowned firm of Tucker & Marks in 2008. As Design Principal, his work with Suzanne Tucker and Tucker & Marks has been featured in numerous books and publications including Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, and Traditional Home. His projects have included homes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and across the country including Sun Valley, New York, Palm Beach, and Aspen.
In 2018 he opened his own firm headquartered in Sausalito, California and recently opened an office in Charleston, South Carolina.
Presented as part of the Interior Design Series at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.
