The Outdoor Room: Inspiration and Design in the Landscape

On April 26, 2023, the ICAA was pleased to welcome the award-winning landscape architect and author Janice Parker for a talk on garden rooms. From peristyle gardens and rose parterres to Hidcote Manor and beyond, her presentation explores the relationship between garden rooms, the landscape, and the architecture they surround. Garden designers discussed in this lecture include icons of the field such as Gertrude Jekyll, Ellen Biddle Shipman, Lawrence Johnston, Annette Hoyt Flanders, and Janice's mentor, John Brookes.

Janice Parker grew up studying the natural and urban environment. While studying at Parsons School of Design, and with John Brookes at the Clock House School of Garden Design in England she worked in the floral business, designing extensively for public and private events and spaces. These experiences solidified her passions for art and landscape design, and in 1984 she officially launched her eponymous firm, Janice Parker Landscape Architects. She chose the unique journey of gaining her landscape architecture license through independent training, practical experience and mentorship from other respected professionals in the field of design. Janice has conceptualized and directed innovative landscape architecture for private and public clients globally. Under her guidance, Janice Parker Landscape Architects has been honored with multiple awards, including the 2019, 2018 and 2016 Stanford White Award for Garden Design, the 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2015 Professional Award from the CTASLA, Interior Design's Best of Year Award for Residential Landscape in 2020, and Veranda’s Best in Outdoor Living Awards in 2022 and 2020.

In 2022 Janice was recognized for her contributions to the growth and professionalism of the design market through her work, mentorship, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, academic, and philanthropic endeavors in Rome, Italy where she received the Design Leadership Award from the DLN. Janice is on the Board of Trustees for Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project, and the Advisory Committee for Nino de la Caridad Foundation. She continues to support the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, and has transformed exterior rooms for their Show House 3 times to date.

Her firm’s work has been featured in Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Veranda, The Washington Post Online, Vogue, and Luxe Interiors + Design – to name a few. In 2017 Images Publishing released “Designing A Vision” which is authored by Janice Parker and showcases her studio’s approach to the art of design.
