2022 Summer Studio in Classical Architecture

The ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture is a four-week immersive program introducing students to skills, knowledge, and resources essential to the practice and appreciation of classical design. Students build a foundation in classical architectural design through coursework in a variety of areas.

Program Schedule

The Summer Studio in Classical Architecture covers the ICAA's Core Curriculum subjects and confers the Certificate in Classical Architecture upon successful completion of the program.

The 2022 program schedule will be available closer to Summer 2022. As a reference for what to expect, you can view a previous schedule here; please note that the Summer Studio schedule changes every year and therefore the instructors, topics, and time allotted for each content area are subject to change for 2022.

The ICAA is committed to the safety of our students and instructors during our programs. To that end, we will follow all CDC guidelines during the Summer Studio program. All program participants must agree to follow the ICAA's health and safety policies for the program, which are available to review here. In addition, applicants must sign a release of liability form, which is included as part of the program application form. What You Will Learn

Students spend their four weeks exploring the ideas, methods, and issues of classical architectural design. Lectures, field trips, discussions, critiques during class sessions are supplemented by design exercises completed during and outside of class time. Students are immersed in study of the following subject areas:

Composition and design
The elements of classical architecture
Geometry and proportion
Drawing and rendering
The literature of classical architecture
The art of building

Instructors

Program instructors and guest lecturers include leading practitioners in the field of classical design practice and distinguished scholars, bringing a broad range of practical expertise, knowledge, and professional experience into the classroom.

Scholarships

The cost to attend the four week Summer Studio is $1,750.

The ICAA is able to offer scholarships to offset tuition costs plus assistance to help with housing costs while in New York to ensure accessibility to the program for students of all financial backgrounds. If you would like to apply for a scholarship and/or housing assistance, please indicate so on your application form.

All decisions regarding scholarships and awards are made solely at the discretion of the ICAA in accordance with established policies and procedures. Please inquire with education@classicist.org for additional information.

FAQ

After applications are submitted, what is the expected amount of time until applicants are notified of your decision?

Applicants are usually informed of the ICAA’s decision about two weeks after the application deadline.

If accepted into the program, will I need to provide my own materials?

You will need to provide some of your own materials. The full list of materials required will be sent to you one month in advance of the program starting.

What are some inexpensive (or free) transportation options in New York City?

The New York City Subway is affordable and accessible. Alternatively, if you find accommodation close to the ICAA offices, you can walk to class each day.

Are meals provided during the program? If meals are provided, are there gluten free or vegetarian options available options?

A few meals are provided, but you will have to purchase the majority of your own meals. If meals are provided, ICAA staff will be sure to contact you before ordering food to make sure any dietary requirements are covered.

How early will I need to arrive at the ICAA studio?

Most classes start at 9:00 AM, but you will be sent a full schedule at least one month before the start of the program.

How late should I expect to be in the studio?

It depends on the schedule, but usually you can leave between 6:00 and 7:00 PM if there is not an evening lecture. During the final week, the ICAA holds open studio until 9:00 PM.

Will I be expected to participate in the Summer Studio on weekends?

There is a field trip each Saturday, and the office is closed on Sundays. There will also be no class on July 4th.

Does the program require a specific dress code?

You should have professional clothes available for the office visits and final review, otherwise please dress as you wish.

How can I obtain additional information about living in New York City during the program?

The ICAA has a list of housing options that can be sent to you if needed.

Are international students and professionals accepted into ICAA programs?

The ICAA welcomes students and professionals from across the world, and international applications are encouraged. In advance of applying, please note that the ICAA cannot provide any paperwork or assistance with visa applications. In addition, please note that international applicants are eligible to apply for tuition scholarships on a case-by-case basis, based on their visa status and accompanying paperwork, but we are not able to provide travel stipends for international applicants.

Who typically attends the Summer Studio in Classical Architecture?

Most of the students in the Summer Studio in Classical Architecture are undergraduate or graduate students, or postgraduates seeking to apply to graduate school, in architecture, interior design, or related fields. Emerging professionals and students with academic backgrounds in other fields are also welcome to apply. We are not able to accept high school students into the Summer Studio program.
