6 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Elective) | 6 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective | 6 LA CES PDHs
From the intimate gardens at Villa Lante to the grand tree-lined malls of Versailles, for centuries landscape architecture has set the stage for a ceremonial sequence of spaces that lead up to, or emanate from, a building, villa, courthouse, or urban home. Landscape architects craft the outdoor space with elements that range from natural topography and vegetation to furniture and pavilions. The result is a design that is seamlessly integrated to the site and the buildings on it.
In this two-part course, participants will first learn about the principles of landscape architecture as a design discipline, through the lens of Italian Gardens of the Renaissance, as well as study historical precedents that influence landscape architects today. Subsequently, attendees will learn about contemporary practice; how landscape architects draw and work; and finally have the opportunity to design a small space applying the lessons learned.
