The course will introduce the fundamental philosophy and elements of traditional architecture and their interiors. Participants will learn the design principles that are common to the great buildings and interiors of the past. Topics discussed will include discovering the proportions common to traditional interiors and mastering simple yet time tested methods of designing and configuring char rails, baseboards, wainscoting, cornices, columns, mantle pieces, and door & window casings.James S. Collins, Architect specializes in the design of traditional buildings and their interiors, as well as, appropriate additions to existing residential, institutional and historic structures. The firm’s work has been featured in A Decade of Art and Architecture and in the periodicals New Old House, Period Homes, Chicago Design Bureau, North Carolina Design, and Washington Life Magazines.He has taught the theory and practice of traditional architecture and interior design at the Parsons School of Design, Moore College of Art, University of the Arts and Philadelphia University. He has presented classes on the design of classical interiors for the Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Southeastern Chapters of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. He has lectured frequently on traditional design for Preservation Greensboro and the Traditional Building Conference. He has served as the President of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, North Carolina Chapter.

The ICAA National Office does not offer recurring continuing education classes on a regular basis, but aims to offer future sessions of classes whose demand exceeded capacity. Core classes are generally offered annually or semi-annually. The frequency of ICAA Chapter courses varies by region.

In order to receive AIA credit, you will need to sign an attendance sheet that is circulated at the beginning of each class. You’ll provide your AIA number, if applicable, email address, and full name as it will appear on your certificate of completion, should you indicate that you would like to receive one. Please be aware that if the course takes place over multiple days, you will need to sign in on every day of the program. If you neglect to provide any of this information, or if you have questions regarding your credits, please contact [email protected]. For webinars hosted via Zoom, please be sure to join the Zoom webinar using your email address and full name so that we may verify your attendance at the program. You may also be asked to fill out a survey prior to the course to confirm your AIA number and whether you would like to receive a Certificate of Completion. Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site.
