Hosted by the ICAA Florida Chapter 2 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Building Arts) | 2 AIA CES Learning Units | Elective
Join us Sunday for a morning highlighting the craft of carpentry and joinery and the craftsmen who provide fine architectural woodwork, cabinetry, furniture, and finishes. Having grown from a four-person woodworking company in 1991 to a team of more than 70 talented and passionate artisans, Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild employs centuries of shared experience in every woodworking project.
Beginning with a tour of their 42,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility which houses design, engineering, manufacturing and finishing departments, we will explore both traditional and modern methods of bringing designs to life in wood. Demonstrating that the range of woodworking skills and experience brought to bear goes beyond mere joinery and fabrication, participants will be taken through the process that brings each project to life, from entire interior fit-outs to intricate furniture pieces to historic and antique restorations.
This event is hosted by an ICAA Chapter. Please check the Chapter website or contact the Chapter directly for the most up-to-date details including dates, times, and pricing.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Gain a deeper understanding of wood crafting trades and skills including their historical and contemporary applications.
2) Develop an appreciation for wood and carpentry as a fundamental consideration in the design of a classical composition, and the capacity of traditional details in woodwork to enrich classical architectural composition.
3) Identify the varied properties of wood as a material, and understanding the role of the various carpentry crafts at many scales of execution
4) Describe the many and varied skills required to execute a design in wood, including traditional joinery, hand carving, lathework, veneers, and finishing techniques.
