Hosted by the ICAA Chicago-Midwest Chapter
Take a summer afternoon tour of some of the grandeur of the past (and present) lake houses on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Your journey will start with a tour of the Yerkes Observatory, a beaux arts and Romanesque style building designed by Henry Ives Cobb. Their landscape was designed by Olmstead Brothers (who designed New York’s Central Park).
Following the tour of Yerkes Observatory, our group will be bussed throughout the tour to visit 3 private estates in Lake Geneva to explore the historically and architecturally significant estate grounds. We will learn about the work of Jens Jenson, landscape architect known for collaborating with Howard Van Doren Shaw, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. We will conclude our afternoon with a cocktail reception at the Lake Geneva Country Club. Our garden tours will be led by landscape architect Roy Diblik. Roy is co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm located in Burlington, Wisconsin. He has been growing traditional and native perennials since 1978. His garden designs emphasize plant relationships to stewardship strategies and costs. Roy’s design and planting projects include the Louis Sullivan Arch Garden for the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago and the lakeside plantings for the new Oceanarium at the Shedd Aquarium. His book ‘The Know Maintenance Perennial Garden’ highlights his perennial gardening practice. Craig Bergmann of Craig Bergmann Landscape Design will also be assisting with leading the tour.
Yerkes & Estate tours are from 12:30 PM – 5:30 PM, with cocktail hour following at the Lake Geneva Country Club
