4 AIA LUs and 4 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture
This one-day drawing and painting program in Greenwich, Connecticut focuses on the subjects of freehand sketching and painting as integral tools of design--disegno.The course is centered on examining and practicing the methods of two 18th and 19th century masters: French Classical designer and artist, Hubert Robert, and English landscape designer, Humphry Repton. The three-part session concludes with a design exercise employing the two learned methods and techniques. An important goal of the course is to improve the illustration and design skills of the participants while highlighting the intertwined relationship between both. In addition to learning the complementary skills of freehand ink sketching and watercolor wash techniques, participants will examine the design approaches and methods of illustration of two different masters practicing in rural and urban settings. Both perspectives, the Classical and the Picturesque, constitute an integral part of the design approaches embraced, synthesized, and practiced by prominent 19th century American architects and landscape designers such as H. H. Richardson, Peabody and Stearns, McKim Mead & White, and Frederick Law Olmstead. The course uses drawing to reexamine the discourse between the two design perspectives.Image: "Hubert Robert."
