The Institute of Classical Art & Architecture (ICAA), Louisiana Chapter, is delighted to present an immersive workshop dedicated to the timeless artistry of ornamental stucco and plaster. This 4 hour workshop will cover essential materials, techniques, and best practices of ornamental plastering, providing a thorough understanding of this intricate skill.
Participants will explore the various types of plaster commonly used in construction, learning how to select and apply the right kind for different project conditions, including climate considerations, fire safety, and sensitivity to historical materials.
Using the Old Governor’s Mansion as a detailed case study, the workshop offers practical insights into the design, execution, and maintenance of ornamental plaster. By examining this historic site, students will gain hands-on experience and learn how to apply these skills to their own projects.

Instructor: Carolyne Chardac
Carolyne Chardac is a traditional plasterer trained in historical plastering and ornamental work including scagliola. She recently obtained a degree in Building Arts with a specialization in Decorative Plasterwork from the American College of Building Arts in Charleston, SC. During her time attending the school, she traveled to England and France to be classically trained in her trade. Carolyne is also an Alumni of LSU with a B.A. degree in Art History.
At the moment, Carolyne is setting up her business, Atelier 11 in the Greater Atlanta area with intentions of doing restoration work, new installations and preservation of plaster throughout the United States, wherever there is a need as well as continuing her hands-on education in Europe.

The ICAA National Office does not offer recurring continuing education classes on a regular basis, but aims to offer future sessions of classes whose demand exceeded capacity. Core classes are generally offered annually or semi-annually. The frequency of ICAA Chapter courses varies by region.

Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site.
