A good place to begin the study of the classical language of architecture is with an overview of the terminology, geometry, and purpose of classical mouldings, the smallest classical parts. Mouldings may be thought of as the molecular units of classical architecture. The classical orders and extended apparatus of classical forms are composed of some combination of these smaller elements. As individual units, and in combination, mouldings exemplify underlying ideas prevalent at all scales of classical design. Participants will learn how to distinguish major profile types and explore the uses of mouldings in classical design.

Course Prerequisites

None required. Course content is designed for those with limited exposure to the classical language, as well as for those seeking to refresh their literacy with the elements of classical architecture.

Sketchbook or drawing pad
Drawing pencils, mechanical pencils, or lead holder with drawing leads (medium and soft leads; recommended: F, HB, B, and 2B)
Eraser
Pencil sharpener or lead sharpener
Drawing compass
Architect's scale

Does the ICAA offer the same continuing education courses seasonally?

The ICAA National Office does not offer recurring continuing education classes on a regular basis, but aims to offer future sessions of classes whose demand exceeded capacity. Core classes are generally offered annually or semi-annually. The frequency of ICAA Chapter courses varies by region.

Do I need to have prior experience to keep up in a studio-based class?

What do I have to do to get AIA CES LUs for a continuing education course?

In order to receive AIA credit, you will need to sign an AIA attendance sheet that is circulated with the ICAA’s own attendance sheet at the beginning of each class. You’ll provide your AIA number, if applicable, email address, and full name as it will appear on your certificate of completion, should you indicate that you would like to receive one. If you neglect to provide any of this information, or if you have questions regarding your credits, please contact [email protected]. For questions related to a regional Chapter's continuing education course, please contact that Chapter directly.

What is the difference between AIA Elective and HSW credits?

Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site. Course content must focus on these topics in order to provide HSW credits. For more information on ICAA classes that have been approved by the AIA for HSW LUs, please contact [email protected].

I am no longer able to attend a course for which I have registered. Am I able to receive a refund of my registration payment for the course?
