5 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Moldings: 2; Tuscan Order: 3) | 5 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective
This program will be held online via Zoom. Registrants will receive a Zoom link one day prior to the course. This practical hands-on drawing course covers the first two subjects in the Elements of Classical Architecture sequence. An overview of the classical language and classical moldings is covered in Part I. The nomenclature, grammar and proportional relationships of the canonical Tuscan Order is covered in Part II. All instruction is live and on-line.Please note that registration for this program includes both Part I (Introduction to the Classical Moldings) and Part II (Introduction to the Tuscan Order). Participants should attend both parts of the course.
A good place to begin study of the classical elements is with an overview of the geometry and terminology of classical moldings, the smallest components of the classical language. The classical orders and extended family of forms are composed of combinations of these components and better understood when one is versed in the grammar of the individual parts. Moldings also represent in miniature for some of the ideas that define classicism itself. Participants will learn how to distinguish profile types and explore guiding principles and theory involved in their design and application.
The second half of the course introduces the terminology and proportional relationships of the classical canon through freehand drawing of a Tuscan column and entablature. This introduction lays the foundation for understanding all of the classical orders and for exploring their use within an architectural composition.
Please note that participants are required to bring drawing materials to participate in the program. A full list of materials is available here.In addition, as participants will be working directly with the instructors over Zoom, please plan on having a computer or tablet with internet access and a functioning camera and microphone. Participants will be expected to photograph their work and send it to the instructors during the course. Prior to the course, please make sure you have a working camera and adequate lighting in order to take images of your work.Should you have any questions about these requirements, please email [email protected].
