Chief Designer of Hearst Castle and architect on over 700 projects throughout the West, Julia Morgan is one of the most prolific and important architects in the United States. A woman of many firsts, Morgan was the first woman admitted to the architecture program at l’École des Beaux-Arts in 1898, the first woman in California to be granted an architect’s license, and recently she was the first woman to earn the AIA Gold Medal for her pioneering achievements.
On March 22, 2022, Julia Morgan’s sesquicentennial year, Victoria Kastner will give a talk centered around her new book, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect, published by Chronicle Books. Drawing on Morgan’s unpublished letters and recently discovered diaries, Kastner provides the first comprehensive portrait of this architect’s inspiring career and private life.
Victoria Kastner was the longtime official historian at Hearst Castle, and has written the definitive trilogy of its history, published by Abrams Books. She is a sought-after lecturer who has spoken at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Ms. Kastner has a master’s degree in Public History with a specialty in architectural history from UC Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree in museum management from George Washington University. She has also written about the Beverly Hills Hotel and Bernard Maybeck’s Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
