Hosted by the Southern California Chapter
Architecture can be seen as an act of translation: taking familiar forms, half-remembered precedents, and architectural fashion, the architect transmutes them into a physical and artistic entity distinct from previous buildings, but displaying the imprint of the many influences that have brought it into being.
Join London-based architects Timothy Smith and Jonathan Taylor in a discussion of how they wrestle such diverse influences, as well as technical, tectonic and financial constraints, into the service of unique new constructions. Smith and Taylor will approach the subject via three facets: an introduction to the theme of architectural translation; examples of work by their students on the subject of architectural translation; and a survey of built and unbuilt projects by their eponymous architectural practice.
