Hosted by the Chicago-Midwest Chapter in Partnership with the Benjamin Marshall Society
The Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the ICAA is pleased to partner with the Benjamin Marshall Society for the upcoming virtual event "Frank Lloyd Wright & the Architects of Steinway Hall" with guest speaker Stuart Cohen of Cohen & Hacker Architects.
In 1897, Frank Lloyd Wright, Robert Spencer, Dwight Perkins, and Myron Hunt, all good friends, moved in together in the loft office space at the top of Steinway Hall, a building Dwight Perkins had designed. They were all about the same age and were all early in the development of their independent architectural practices. They collaborated on projects together and participated in the Chicago Architectural Club, the Chicago Arts and Crafts Society, and the vibrant architectural culture that characterized the profession in Chicago at the beginning of the last century. Together in Steinway Hall they shared in the development of ideas that would impact twentieth century architecture. Stuart Cohen, architect, educator, and author of Frank L. Wright and the Architects of Steinway Hall: A Study in Collaboration, will discuss the time these men spent together and the creative “collaborative circle” they formed.
Stuart Cohen is a practicing architect, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and professor of architecture emeritus at the University of Illinois, Chicago. In 2018 he was the recipient of the ICAA’s Arthur Ross Award for his writing and contributions to architectural history and theory. The following year Cohen served as the co-editor of the issue of the ICAA’s publication, the Classicist, devoted to Chicago architecture. That same year he received an Award for Excellence in Architecture, Scholarship and Academics from the Society of Architectural Historians, and in 2021 he was awarded the Chicago Chapter AIA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the author of five books on Chicago architecture and his talk on Steinway Hall is based on his most recent book as well as his continuing fascination with Chicago’s architectural culture at the beginning of the twentieth century.
