Hosted by the Southeast Chapter
Completing the first round of the Graphite & Grits tour of the Southeast Chapter states takes us to Tennessee and to Historic Rock Castle. Rock Castle was built by General Daniel Smith, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, a surveyor, and planter. Construction on the home began in 1791 using Tennessee limestone as the primary building material that was quarried on the property. The house is the oldest stone house in Middle Tennessee and represents a transitional element in frontier Tennessee architecture and construction. It is among the first important houses in the state to reflect a measure of architectural planning. Built in the Federal Style, the two story front porch was a later addition.
