The Gilded Age, also referred to as the American Renaissance, is an era associated with unparalleled growth, technological advancement, prosperity, and cultural change. Spanning from the 1880s to the 1930s it marks the first time that the titans of American finance and industry had more wealth than their European counterparts. As the center of this dynamic economy, New York City attracted immigrant workers and millionaires alike. It was not enough for the self-appointed elite to just build their own grand chateaux and palazzo’s along Fifth Avenue. They collectively dreamed of creating a new metropolis to rival the great cultural capitals of London, Paris and Rome. To flaunt their newly acquired wealth they needed an architecture dripping in embellishment and historical reference. Enter the Beaux-Arts. Phillip James Dodd explores this extraordinary world in his new book An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City, which includes a foreword by Downton Abbey Creator Julian Fellowes and an essay by renowned architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson.
Please join Phillip James Dodd on Thursday, March 10th at the General Society Library (20 W 44th Street, NY, NY 10036) as he takes us on a tour of some of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts buildings in New York City giving unparalleled access to famous New York Landmarks and buildings not viewable to the public. Focusing on their lavish interiors and supplemented with exquisite photography taken specially for the book, Dodd will recount the fascinating stories that brought some of the greatest architects and artisans of the day - like Charles McKim, Cass Gilbert, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens - together with some of the most prominent millionaires in American History - like Henry Clay Frick, J.P. Morgan, and John D. Rockefeller.
Signed copies of An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City will be available for purchase at the in-person lecture.
