PATCO PERAMBULATION: A WALKING TOUR OF CLASSICAL CAMDEN & HADDONFIELD, NJ

A chance to see classical architecture in the neighboring state of New Jersey, this three-hour walking tour will utilize the PATCO train line to visit two historic colonial towns – Camden and Haddonfield. Josh Eckert AIA, and ICAA Philadelphia Chapter Board member, will lead the walking tour which will begin in Center City Philadelphia before traversing the Paul Cret-designed Ben Franklin Bridge into the heart of a revitalizing Camden, NJ.

Building upon its legacy as the historic center of South Jersey, Camden has undergone a revitalization campaign over the past 10 years which has included the rehabilitation and reuse of multiple historic, Classical buildings. The walking tour of Camden will follow along the primary commercial streets of Camden – Market Street and Cooper Street. Highlights of the walking tour will include Camden City Hall by Edwards & Green, the Camden Trust Company building by Rankin & Kellogg, the Dr. Henry Genet Taylor House by Wilson Eyre, Jr., the former Cooper Library by Karcher & Smith and the former RCA Victor ‘Nipper Building’ by Ballinger & Perrot, among others.

Following the walk through Camden, attendees will then take a short PATCO train ride to Haddonfield to enjoy a tour along Kings Highway showcasing many of the buildings that contributes to its designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights of the walking tour of Haddonfield will include Haddonfield Borough Hall, the Indian King Tavern, and multiple Romanesque-style churches. The tour will conclude at Greenfield Hall, the current home of the Haddonfield Historical Society. Following the tour, attendees are free to continue to explore Haddonfield, grab lunch at one of the many restaurants, or return to Philadelphia via the PATCO train line.
