Hosted by the Northern California Chapter
Please join the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Northern California Chapter, for a lecture and book signing. King Louis XIV’s favorite artist, Charles Le Brun (1619–1690) has often been described as a “dictator of the arts in France”—a view, which Wolf Burchard reassesses in his book, The Sovereign Artist. This lecture will look into the relationship between the famous artist and the great monarch and explore Le Brun’s different fields of activities, focusing particularly on his ambitious architectural designs for the Louvre and Versailles.
The Sovereign Artist: Charles Le Brun and the Image of Louis XIV (Paul Holberton Publishing, 2016), by Wolf Burchard with a foreword by Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy of Arts, examines the wide artistic production of Louis XIV’s most prolific and powerful artist, Charles Le Brun (1619–1690), illustrating the magnificence of his paintings and focusing particularly on the interiors and decorative works of art produced according to his designs.
This event is hosted by an ICAA Chapter. Please check the chapter website, or contact the chapter directly, for up-to-date information.
