SKETCHING BENEDICT SATURDAY: An Exploration of Jacques Benedict’s WorksTHE FITZELL HOUSE:The Fitzell House was designed in 1927 by Jacques Benedict. Using his own interpretation of the French Tudor style, Benedict designed an asymmetrical front elevation beautifully balanced with a tall, seamlessly integrated brick chimney serving as a counterweight to the plunging eave-line and arched French window outboard of the front door. The projecting entry draws attention to the front door defined by a carved limestone surround and wrought iron sconces. The unique way Benedict used the brick cores as a decorative element by turning the bricks flat and filling the cores with mortar is a defining feature. He further customized the look by using partial bricks (with only two cores), and, in certain cases, bracketed them with flashed brick for additional detail.
