Hosted by the ICAA Southeast Chapter
In 2019, after the terrible fire that destroyed Notre Dame de Paris, Asselin, and 3 other French companies, were appointed to rebuild the spire of the cathedral. Viollet-le-Duc's spire, remarkable for its profusion of medieval-inspired architectural decoration, was one of the most complex pieces to restore. Facing this historic challenge and incredible adventure, the craftsmen worked tirelessly to respect the original drawings, adhering to techniques dating from the 19th century. Since December 2023, the spire is back on top of Paris’ most prestigious landmark, reaching an impressive height of 315 feet and identical to that of 1859.
What if a similar disaster were to happen to an iconic structure in the United States such as the National Cathedral, could we respond, do we have the craftspeople or the processes to educate the next generation and beyond?
Join ICAA Southeast and the Georgia Tech School of Architecture in the College of Design as we welcome Francois Asselin of Asselin, and representatives of Handshoue Studio Notre Dame project, Michael Burrey, Instructor at the North Bennett Street School, Boston, and Jackson DuBois, Executive Director of The Timber Framers Guild as they tell the story of Notre Dame, their participation in the rebuilding, and the education processes that set the stage for the reconstruction to happen so quickly.
