Primitive – Geometric Forms – Abstractions of Nature: March 25, 2021
Part II: The Representational
Natural Forms – Text Content – Narrative Content: April 8, 2021
Ornament is defined as artistic elements added to an otherwise functional structure or object, with the sole purpose of making it more beautiful. This elaboration has the power to both beautify and glorify, and the content does not have to be explicitly understood by the viewer in order to be enjoyed.
This course will examine the Language of Ornament, based on categories rather than geographies. Humans have been creating similar forms across the world for millennia, and this lecture will explore artistic expression that appears to be universal both in origin and intent. Course participants will achieve a greater degree of fluency in the language of Ornament.
“Ornament is the only visual art whose primary if not exclusive purpose is pleasure.” James Trilling
“Ornament is the language through which Architecture communicates with a broader public.” Architectural Review
