Join the ICAA in Partnership with Lutyens Trust America for a lecture with David Frazer Lewis. The Lutyens Memorial Volumes are a landmark of architectural publishing, providing the most thorough coverage ever accorded to a modern British architect. Always intended as a tool for designers, they have been studied by architects as wide-ranging as Frank Lloyd Wright, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, and Allan Greenberg. This talk will explore the seldom-told story of the genesis of the Memorial Volumes, amidst the austerity, rationing, and ascendant modernism of postwar Britain. It will trace their influence in Britain and the United States through the course of the twentieth century, and the way that their reprinting in the 1980s and now in the 2020s, has allowed Lutyens to remain an inspiration to many architects today. The first volume in the ICAA's reprint of the series, The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens: The Country Houses, is available for purchase here.
David Frazer Lewis is Associate Professor of Architectural History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Kellogg College. He has published on a wide range of topics in 19th and 20th century architecture, including Gothic Revival cathedrals in the United States, British architecture of the 1920s, and the work of Giles Gilbert Scott. His book on A.W.N. Pugin was published by Historic England in 2021.
