Join the ICAA and artist James Boyd for a presentation on unusual mural painting. In his presentation, Boyd will discuss his many excursions that led to the large landscapes he painted for the Period Rooms of the Met’s recently renovated British Galleries. He will speak on the particular function, the methods, and the ultimate tangents that made this project a two year sabbatical from private commissions to connect the 18c exterior settings with the rooms for millions of public visitors.
Boyd will walk attendees through the process of painting life size landscapes, the steps of classic technique, the structured palette, traditional materials, plus other mediums such as printed murals, ceramic murals, eglomise, dioramas, and panoramas. He will do this while discussing aesthetics of 16c-18c painting, architecture, landscape design, and cultural life through Claude, Robert Adam, Capability Brown, the Claude Glass, the Picturesque and the Sublime, to Instagram, Virtual Reality, and AI.
James Boyd is an art studio partner with Anne Reath in Manhattan. Boyd Reath has been working with architects, interior designers, and museums for 45 years. James trained as an academic and abstract painter to think about all the techniques passed down through centuries of changing aesthetics so generously made real by our artistic forebears. The studio has always worked, deliberately and intuitively, with utmost respect for that heritage of traditional qualities through new applications, while keeping a sense of humor. Boyd Reath has won the Arthur Ross Award for Mural Painting in 2010 and the McKim, Mead & White Award for Artisanship in 2023.
James was profiled in The New Yorker's Talk of the Town (March 16, 2020) for his work in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
