The ICAA Chicago Chapter in partnership with Classical Excursions presents this special excursion to discover Antigua, Cayala & Tikal, Guatemala.
This tour is arranged by Classical Excursions. El Convento Boutique Hotel
Participants will stay at the El Convento Boutique Hotel in the city of Antigua: a UNESCO World Heritage town which dates back 480 years, having been founded in 1542. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Casa Popenoe
Participants will receive a full day architectural tour of Antigua and its Spanish Colonial architecture with local architect and ICAA member Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro. This tour includes visits to a selection of private homes in Antigua and the historic house museum Casa Popenoe.
San Francisco, La Merced, and the Santa Clara Convent
Participants will receive another full day architectural tour of Antigua with architect Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro. This tour includes visits to the city's many churches including the San Francisco, La Merced, and the Santa Clara Convent.
Finca Carmona and the Bishops Palace and church at San Juan Del Obispo
Participants will spend a morning touring local villages and coffee farms, including Finca Carmona and the Bishops Palace and church at San Juan Del Obispo.
Cayala
Participants will attend a private tour of the planned city of Cayala, which was designed under the direction of the architect and urban planner Leon Krier. They will be joined by Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro, along with the co-founder of Estudio Urbano: architect Maria Sanchez. Maria and her husband, Pedro Pablo Godoy Barrios, have been at the helm of Cayala’s design alongside Leon Krier. They have also designed their own home which is inspired by local Guatemalan traditions and incorporates classical architecture. Participants will tour this planned city’s public spaces along with a few private homes, including that of Maria and Pedro.
Tikal
Participants will take a private plane to Flores, where they will then travel to the great Mayan complex of Tikal for a full day visit. Tikal was inhabited from the 6th century B.C.E. to the 10th century C.E., and the site contains extensive ruins of temples, palaces, public spaces, and residences.
